Five questions to ask your pork supplier

Are you looking to promote new, tasty varieties of bacon for sale and other pork meat products in your retail store? Make sure that you find a wholesale meat supplier that can answer all the following questions definitively.

1. What do the pigs eat at the farm?

Like humans, pigs need a varied diet filled with vitamins and minerals to stay healthy. It’s a misconception that you can feed them food scraps and waste; this can lead to infections and other serious illnesses such as foot and mouth disease and African swine fever.

Therefore, farmers should be providing ‘pig feed’ that contains a mixture of fruit, grains and vegetables. Commercially produced pig feed that contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals is also available for large scale pig farmers.

2. What is the pigs’ water source?

Ethical producers should only let pigs drink clean fresh water. Usually, on farms, there is a designated deep well that provides the water. However, if the well is too shallow, there is a high risk of being contaminated by sewer run-off. Farmers should be asked if they are performing regular water testing.

3. Do the suppliers support local farming?

The reality is that some farmers simply can’t afford good quality feed for their pigs. By purchasing the product from the local farmers, a supplier participates in keeping the food value chain as robust as possible. All suppliers should hold the ‘Proudly South African’ motto up high and purchase from local farmers.

4. Does the supplier offer a wide range of pork meat products that will be popular with your customers?

Customers have different preferences regarding the types, cuts and overall selection of pork available at your store. Bacon, for example, is available in a variety of cuts which include shoulder, back and streaky. If you want to increase and retain a broad customer base at your retail store, ensure that the supplier has various products available for purchase.

5. What processes and procedures does the meat supplier use to ensure that food safety practices are maintained?

Does the supplier vacuum seal their product and transport it according to the correct cold chain distribution and management protocols? These are two vital questions that require a resounding YES. Food and safety procedures are of the utmost importance for you and your customers.
