Essential restaurant cost-saving tips

Running a restaurant can be very expensive if you don’t invest and follow cost-saving methods. These can include purchasing energy-efficient appliances, buy your meat products in bulk from local suppliers and training your staff to follow recycling best practices. Here are four top tips you should follow.

  1. Invest in energy-efficient appliances & light bulbs
Energy-efficient appliances can help reduce the cost of electricity significantly. It’s worth making a list of all the appliances you’re currently using and invest in purchasing an energy-efficient version such as fryers, dishwashing machines and beverage fridges. Also, make fit out your restaurant with LED bulbs. They use less electricity and last up to approximately ten times longer than a standard incandescent bulb.
  2. Buy your pork meat products in bulk
Buying pork in bulk online is cost-effective because you’re not paying for packaging and branding costs. This also means that you can add a decent profit mark-up without making the food too expensive for consumers at your establishment. Buying pork in bulk also supports local suppliers and producers; it’s a vital relationship that strengthens the food value chain and fortifies its economy. If producers are selling in high volumes, they are likely to offer favourable discounts to suppliers who can subsequently offer you advantageous prices.
  3. Trim down your menu
Track the sales of each item on your menu and eliminate the ones that aren’t selling. If you’re buying meat for dishes that no one’s buying, it’s likely most of the excess will go to waste. By refining your menu, you’ll reduce food spoilage and lessen your food costs.
  4. Train your staff to be eco-friendly
Ensure that your staff are well versed in recycling processes, are aware of something in the restaurant that isn’t functioning correctly, e.g. a leaking pipe or tap and follow South African health and hygiene practices.
